Essential Anthology of Gerardo Caetano
Within the framework of the 45th Montevideo International Fair, on Wednesday, October 4, the book “The novelty of history. An essential anthology. Politics, rights, integration, and democracy"Of Gerardo Caetano, co-coordinator of the CLACSO Working Group “Decentering International Relations”. A joint publication of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences and Editorial Planeta.
In the Blue Room of the Montevideo City Hall, the Uruguayan historian was accompanied Karina Batthyány, Executive Director of CLACSO; Wilfredo Penco, president of the National Academy of Letters; Ana Fraga, president of the Uruguayan Association of Historians; and Rafael Radi, president of the National Academy of Sciences of Uruguay, who highlighted the importance of Caetano's work and his contributions to the debates of yesterday and today.
This anthology brings together more than twenty texts that highlight the key moments in the work of this renowned historian. Reviewing his career offers a journey through recent Uruguayan history spanning two centuries, particularly the final years of the dictatorship, the restoration of civil liberties, and the development of democracy.
The texts are organized into five sections that identify the fundamental axes of a body of work spanning more than four decades: Uruguayan political history; the concern with the tensions that fuel identities and the question of rights; the vicissitudes of integration and regionalism in Latin America; perspectives on personalities from different fields and eras; and the dialectic between democracy and politics in Latin America. With contributions that demonstrate the quality and precision of his formulations, the extensive support of documentation and statistical data, and the prevailing sharpness of his viewpoints, he has delineated the clear profile of a multifaceted personality, a figure of significant influence within a valuable group of contemporary historians, political scientists, and social scientists with whom he interacts, constantly striving for a joint interpretive exploration of Uruguay, the region, and the world around us.
