Given the serious situation of public universities in Argentina

Given the serious economic and financial situation facing public universities and scientific organizations in Argentina, the Steering Committee and Member Centers of CLACSO/Argentina express our concern about the complex difficulties involved in not having the necessary budget to ensure the proper functioning of academic and scientific institutions.

In the 40 years of democracy, public universities have maintained the activities that guarantee the full right to higher education for all citizens. In their classrooms, laboratories, and campuses, they have trained outstanding professionals committed to democracy, the advancement of scientific knowledge, and critical thinking.

Public universities, particularly those operating in all provinces of the country, maintain strong links with the various expressions of civil society: businesses, unions, schools, and social movements in those territories.

In 40 years of democracy, student enrollment has increased considerably, with many students being the first in their families to pursue university studies. This contributes to building citizenship and brings personal, scientific, and professional development to all sectors of society, regardless of their economic means. Furthermore, the research conducted at public universities makes valuable contributions to public policy and has demonstrated its social commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through its activities, it seeks to contribute to the requirements of society in the formation of citizens who respect human rights and contribute to the construction of a society without inequalities and justice for all.

Therefore, as graduates and employees of public universities, the CLACSO/Argentina Centers express our solidarity and support for the national march on April 23. At the same time, we invite all of society to join the struggle in defense of public education.
