The Latin American Council of Social Sciences congratulates Anahí Durand Guevara, researcher of the CLACSO network and coordinator of the Working Group “States in Dispute”, appointed Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations of the new government of Pedro Castillo in Peru.

Anahí Durand Guevara is a sociologist and politician who participated as a researcher in various projects related to social movements, political representation, indigenous peoples, interculturality, and gender.

During the swearing-in ceremony, she emphasized her commitment: “For the memory of Micaela Bastidas, for Peruvian women, and for a country with equality. Yes, I swear.”

In a Twitter thread, he argued that “In times of renewed conservatism, we must face challenges. I make this decision to respond to the expectations of millions of Peruvian women who support a path to change, especially those women affected by the crisis: Andean, Amazonian, and Afro-Peruvian women. We will work for a country with justice, equality, and full autonomy. It is also my commitment to not give up and to promote an equality agenda that includes guaranteeing rights and recognition for the LGBTQ+ population, with whom we must also work side by side. We cannot tolerate any kind of discrimination. Women have never had it easy, neither in politics, nor in academia, nor in government. I have been in this struggle for 25 years; in my time as a student leader, we were very few, and today, as a university professor, we are still a minority. The struggle is ongoing and takes place in all spheres.”
