Unequal Latin America
On Monday, October 21, the book “ Unequal Latin America. Questions, approaches and recent trends ” was launched , coordinated by Gonzalo Assusa (CONICET/IDH-UNC) and Gabriela Benza (UNSAM/UNTREF).
Organized by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences and Siglo XXI editors, Assusa and Benza were accompanied by Karina Batthyány (Executive Director, CLACSO), Juan Pablo Pérez Sainz (FLACSO Costa Rica) and Gabriel Kessler (CONICET/UNSAM/UNLP).
In the social sciences, inequality is not merely a subfield. Rather, it constitutes a fundamental epistemological approach to the disciplines, a way of questioning reality and addressing research problems, as well as a result of the very reproduction of social life. Within this framework, this book aims to provide an overview of the inquiries and perspectives that have accompanied the renewed interest in inequality in Latin America since the beginning of the century. The first set of chapters focuses on the distinctive characteristics and the historical and recent transformations of Latin American social structures. The second section centers on unequal experiences, identities, political preferences, and biographies in the region. Finally, the chapters in the third part of the book address new questions and approaches to inequality. Taken together, this volume is a fundamental resource for building social consensus and political agendas that promote equality in our societies.
