The Amazon is both the subject and object of numerous and varied debates, ranging from its biological and cultural diversity and its role in mitigating the greenhouse effect to its economic potential and the sustainability of its natural resources. Undoubtedly, this discussion is here to stay and must be enriched with accurate and relevant knowledge of its reality(ies). It is in this spirit that the Center for Labor and Agrarian Development Studies (CEDLA) and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), with the support of the Embassy of Sweden in Bolivia, promoted the research competition "Capitalist Market Expansion and the Amazon as a New Resource Frontier in the 21st Century." The purpose of this call for proposals was to deepen understanding of the causes of the socioeconomic and spatial transformations currently occurring in the Amazon, paying attention to the socioeconomic dynamics of land occupation and use, and highlighting the role of states and the economic and political actors involved in the interplay of interests. As part of the outcome of this work, we present this publication, Amazonia and capitalist commercial expansion. New resource frontier in the 21st century, which we hope will contribute to a greater understanding of what is happening in the Amazon, its processes, actors, and disputes.
