Amazonia and capitalist mercantile expansion
As a result of extensive collaborative work between CLACSO and the Center for Labor and Agrarian Development Studies (CEDLA), with the support of the Embassy of Sweden in Bolivia, we present a book of abstracts and a book containing the results of the nineteen research projects carried out within the framework of the call for proposals “Capitalist Market Expansion and the Amazon as a New Resource Frontier in the 21st Century,” promoted by these institutions. These studies reveal a current situation that highlights the problems produced by the socioeconomic and spatial transformations occurring in the Amazon, resulting from an accumulation pattern defined by the world-system and by local populations subject to accumulation processes, yet—in many cases—resisting the disappearance of the commons.
