CLACSO launches a new open call, whose objective will be the publication of a volume on the work and contributions of Alain Touraine to the field of social sciences and Western thought since the mid-twentieth century and, especially, on his great influence in this sense in Latin America.

Alain Touraine belonged to a generation that actively participated in the debate on social sciences and Western thought from the mid-20th to the early 21st century. His primary focus was to chronicle societal conflicts and decipher the transformations of what he called the post-industrial world, where social movements were "the driving force of change." He was particularly concerned with understanding society in terms of the existence of a social subject and with recognizing change as a continuous product of collective and transformative action.

In 1956 he founded the Center for Studies for the Sociology of Work at the University of Chile; two years later, the Workshop of Industrial Sociology in Paris, which he directed until 1993. He culminated his public career as director of Studies at the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris.

He always maintained strong ties with Latin America and its processes, from the late 1950s in Chile to the present day. He trained several generations of prominent Latin American sociologists who attended his courses in Paris. He also demonstrated profound fraternity and solidarity with students and colleagues persecuted by Latin American dictatorships.

OPINION – Alain Touraine in Latin America

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) announces the results of the call for essays “Alain Touraine in Latin America”, a proposal aimed at the presentation of essays by a single author on the challenges of communication, politics and rights in the digital age, organized jointly.

This initiative aims to publish a volume on the work and contributions of Alain Touraine to the field of social sciences and Western thought from
mid-twentieth century and, especially, its great influence in this regard in Latin America.

We congratulate the authors who responded to this call and submitted their essay proposals.

Twenty-one applications were received, of which, after technical and formal review, twenty were in a position to be qualitatively evaluated by an Editorial Committee to consider the quality, relevance, timeliness and coherence of the proposals according to the call.

According to the evaluation carried out, the list of the 5 essay proposals selected to be published as an open access digital book edited by CLACSO is presented below.
