Now São Paulo
Brazil is experiencing a worrying period of advancing neoliberalism and curtailing civil liberties. Therefore, it is crucial that social researchers gather in one of its cities, São Paulo, to discuss the future of our continent.
From May 6 to 10, I will participate, along with various CLACSO Working Groups, in the “First International Congress on Thought and Research on Latin America”, a forum for the presentation of works and reflections on diverse topics related to the region by Brazilian and international Latin Americanist participants. Within this framework, I will share the “Panel on Scientific Integration in the Social Sciences and Humanities in Latin America” with Lucio Oliver, Laís Abramo, and Milton Santos, focusing on the theme ofUnderstanding reality to transform it. The importance of the Social Sciences in the current situation.
I will also participate in the “Third International Symposium Thinking and Rethinking Latin America", at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH) of São Paulo. In its third edition, the Symposium It will bring together speakers and exhibitorss Internationally renowned for its research and knowledge production on Latin America and the Caribbean, this forum fosters debate on social and humanities thought about our region. It was created in 2014 by the Latin American Integration Postgraduate Program at the University of São Paulo (PROLAM/USP) with the aim of disseminating knowledge about the region in the fields of politics, economics, sociology, communication, culture, education, law, and international relations.
The meeting in Brazil will also host the “Permanent Forum of Postgraduate Programs in Latin America”, a traveling activity promoted by the PROLAM/USP team that will bring together every two years the researchers of the Postgraduate Programs in Latin American Studies of Brazil.
In addition, among other activities, I will participate in the Florestan Fernandes National School's celebration of the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO Chair in rural education and territorial development, where I will be able to talk with teachers and students from UNESP and Via Campesina; and I will hold a meeting with the president of the UNESP Publishing House to discuss joint publications with CLACSO.
Articulate thinkers from Latin America
The organizers believe that, “While on the international stage there are several events about Latin America, with interdisciplinary perspectives and a significant presence of researchers from different countries, in Brazil there are relatively few events about the region, compared to the production potential, and they do not always cross the different areas of knowledge of the social sciences, humanities and arts in a single event.” They rescue thinkers on the economic and political dependence of the region, such as Florestan Fernandes, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Octávio Ianni, Francisco Weffort, Theotónio dos Santos, Vânia Bambirra, Rui Mauro Marini, among many others.
They conclude that the event at the University of São Paulo “It will initially help to address the lack of interdisciplinary spaces for meeting and debating intellectual projects about Latin America that are produced in Brazil. Secondly, it aims to connect Brazilian thinkers with intellectuals from other countries in the region and the world who wish to establish interdisciplinary and scientific dialogues with Brazilian researchers.”
