Goodbye to Mercedes Olivera Bustamante
With great sadness, CLACSO announces the passing, on Sunday, August 7, 2022, of the Mexican anthropologist, teacher, researcher, and feminist Mercedes Olivera Bustamanteand we stand with their family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.
Her entire life has been dedicated to working in collaboration with Indigenous women, human rights, labor rights, and sexuality. She was the founder of several civil society organizations, such as the Center for Research and Action of Latin American Women (CIAM), the Mercedes Olivera Feminist Collective (COFEMO), and the Chiapas Women's Rights Center (CDMCH), all located in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas.
As a fitting tribute to her career, we awarded her the CLACSO Prize in 2018 during the 8th Latin American and Caribbean Conference in Buenos Aires. Without a doubt, her immense feminist and revolutionary legacy will accompany us in our present and future struggles. Our Latin American Council of Social Sciences has been—and will continue to be—a major disseminator of her research and reflections, such as the publication of her Essential Anthology: Popular feminism and revolution: Between militancy and anthropology
