 Goodbye to Juan Luis Martín Chávez

With regret, CLACSO announces the passing on Wednesday, December 7, of the distinguished Cuban sociologist Juan Luis Martín Chávez, who from his various positions was a tireless collaborator of our Council.

A Member of Merit of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, he was born in Havana in 1947 and had a long career as an intellectual and scientist, recognized nationally and internationally as a specialist in urban sociology, sociology of youth and sociology of science.

In addition, he was a dedicated Coordinator of the Social Sciences and Humanities Section and a member of the Board of Directors of the Cuban Academy of Sciences for many years, a researcher in areas such as the Development of Rural Communities in Cuba; Housing and the Rural Family in Cuba; Methodology of Sociological Research.

Associate Professor of the Higher School of the PCC "Ñico López", gave lectures at Universities in Cuba and around the world, in New York, France, Venezuela, Angola, Nicaragua and represented Cuba at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris for several years.

He was a member of the Expert Group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Editorial Board of the magazine "Contracorriente", the International Relations Commission of CITMA, and the Coordination Group of the Cuban Chapter of the Front in Defense of Humanity.

From CLACSO we extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, friends and the people of Cuba on the passing of Juan Luis.
