Goodbye to Franz Hinkelammert

CLACSO regrets the passing of Franz Josef Hinkelammert, a prominent German intellectual, a leading figure in Latin American social sciences and critical thinking for the last 50 years.

After beginning his studies in Germany, he settled in Santiago, Chile, in 1963, working at the School of Sociology and the Center for Studies of National Reality at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. In 1973, he was forced to return to his native country, fleeing the coup d'état led by Augusto Pinochet. However, three years later, he returned to Latin America, settling in San José, Costa Rica, where he helped found the Ecumenical Department of Research of San José and where, except for a brief stay in Honduras, he would remain for the rest of his life.

His work in the fields of liberation theology, humanism, and theological critique of capitalism, as well as his reinterpretations of Marxism, are just some of the contributions of his extensive oeuvre.
