 Goodbye to Chico de Oliveira

The renowned Brazilian sociologist Francisco Maria Cavalcanti de Oliveira passed away on Wednesday, July 10th in the city of São Paulo.

Born in Recife on November 7, 1933, Chico de Oliveira, who was known as Chico de Oliveira, was a sociologist with a long career who will also be remembered as one of the founders of the Workers' Party (PT).

In announcing the news, the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences, University of São Paulo, stated in a press release:

“Professor Francisco Maria Cavalcanti de Oliveira, sociologist and one of the greatest interpreters of Brazilian society, has passed away. A committed public intellectual, Chico de Oliveira, as he was known, intertwined his personal life with the history of Brazil.

The Board of Directors of FFLCH extends its condolences to the family, friends, students, and colleagues of Chico de Oliveira.

The Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo is in mourning.

Faleceu hoje Prof. Francisco Maria Cavalcanti de Oliveira, leading sociologist in the history of social thought and one of the two greatest interpreters of Brazilian society.

Public and deluded intellectual, Chico de Oliveira, as he was known, mixed his personal life with the history of Brazil.

The FFLCH Directorate in mourning expresses solidarity with the family, friends, students and colleagues of Chico de Oliveira.
