The magazine Latin American Perspectives The journal is calling for manuscript submissions for a special issue that seeks to reflect on the state of democracies in the region and their relationship to contemporary forms of capitalism. The dossier invites the exploration of new visions of democracy for the left, reclaiming agendas from the Global South in the face of the liberal appropriation of the concept since the 1980s.

Themes

  • The scope, limitations, and problems of the liberal democratic agenda that took hold in the region
    from the 1980s onwards.
  • The political economy of democracy in Latin America under contemporary capitalism,
considering financialization, global value chains, wealth concentration, precarity and
informality of work, tensions in social protection and reconfiguration of sovereignty in the face of
    transnational corporations and platforms.
  • The contemporary configuration of the digital public sphere and its effects on democracies
Latin American countries, considering the role of platforms and artificial intelligence in the production of
political subjectivities, the circulation of disinformation, polarization, and new forms of surveillance.
  • The socio-ecological crisis as a structural challenge for formal democracies in the region,
considering the territorial conflicts associated with extractivism, energy transitions, the
climate justice and disputes over the material reproduction of life.
  • The debates on “global democracy”, offering a critical interpretation of the views
dominant globalist liberals, with an emphasis on cosmopolitan perspectives.
  • Alternative visions of national and global democracies, to reconceptualize —among others
aspects— the forms of political organization of nation-states in Latin America in recent times
    decades.
  • New perspectives on left-wing democracy for building a political agenda
    transformative for the region.

Contributions are welcome in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
