The Institute for Social Research (IfS) is accepting applications for the Horkheimer Fellowship 2026, a postdoctoral fellowship aimed at international researchers in social sciences and humanities interested in developing a research project in the field of critical theory.
The call seeks honor the legacy of Max Horkheimer, philosopher and sociologist, recognized as one of the central figures in the development of critical theory and historical director of the IfS.
Topic 2026: Fascism and Antifascism
The 2026 edition of the scholarship will focus on the analysis of contemporary processes of fascization and anti-fascist practicesIn a context marked by the growing advance of authoritarian movements and regressive political projects on a global scale, the call proposes to deepen the academic debate on whether these transformations can be interpreted as the beginning of a new wave of fascization.
Within this framework, submissions are invited. theoretical or empirical proposals that engage with classical analyses of fascism—including those developed by the first generation of critical theory—in order to understand contemporary social configurations.
Likewise, the call seeks to promote research that explores current forms of resistance and anti-fascist social practices, as well as the conditions, limits and contradictions that these experiences encompass.
Characteristics of the scholarship
- Directed to international postdoctoral researchers
- Stay of three months at the Institute for Social Research
- Integration into the academic activities of the institute
- Possibility of participating in presentations, colloquiums or workshops
- Subsequent academic publication linked to the project developed during the stay
