Call for papers for the Symposium “Dissidences in Motion: Trajectories of LGBTIQ+ Movements in Latin America and the Caribbean”

Within the framework of the 59th International Congress of Americanists (ICA) , which will take place from July 5 to 9, 2027 at the Pontifical Bolivarian University , in Medellín, Colombia, the call for papers for the Thematic Symposium “Dissidences in Motion: Trajectories of LGBTIQ+ Movements in Latin America and the Caribbean” is now open.
The 59th International Congress of Americanists will be held under the theme “Tradition and Innovation: The Memories of the Americas” and proposes an interdisciplinary space for meeting, reflection and dialogue on the transformations of contemporary societies and the multiple ways in which the Americas preserve, redefine and reinvent their historical, political, social, cultural and sexual roots.
The symposium, proposed by the CLACSO Working Group “Activisms and Sexual Citizenships: Interdisciplinary Dialogues” , seeks to bring together research, critical reflections and activist experiences on the origins, developments, tensions and legacies of social movements linked to sex and gender dissidence in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The call for papers aims to recover and highlight the historical memories and contributions of gay, lesbian, and feminist liberation movements and trans resistance movements, as well as to analyze their contributions to the construction and expansion of sexual citizenship in the region. Submissions are invited from the fields of social sciences, humanities, law, public health, and the arts.
The proposals may address any of the following themes:
- Homosexual liberation movements in Latin America and the Caribbean: networks, practices and political legacies.
- Lesbian memories and autonomies: struggles of lesbian women's movements in feminist and social contexts.
- Trans resistances: Body, territory and memory in the struggles for recognition and existence.
- Bisexuality and political visibility: trajectories, movements and disputes for recognition.
- Intersexuality and bodily autonomy: body, human rights and resistance to medical interventions.
- Memory, archive and representation: strategies for the preservation of the struggles for sex and gender dissidence.
- Beyond the traditional margin: identities, experiences and mobilizations made invisible within the hegemonic narratives of diversity.
📅 Deadline for submission of papers: January 31, 2027.
Proposals should include full name, country, city, institutional affiliation, level of education, email address, a brief curriculum vitae of up to 250 words, an abstract of 200-300 words , five keywords, and the language of presentation. Submissions in Spanish, Portuguese, and English are accepted . An ORCID ID is optional.
The participating papers may be included in a collective book as a result of the Thematic Symposium.
