50 years after the coup in Chile

SPECIAL PROGRAM FROM VALPARAISO AND SANTIAGO, CHILE

On Wednesday, September 13, a new program from Valparaíso and Santiago from the fourth season of InfoCLACSO will be broadcast live on the YouTube channel and the Facebook and LinkedIn profiles.

The electoral victory of Popular Unity in Chile on September 4, 1970, with Salvador Allende at the helm, marked an era in the region and raised alarms in the administration of President Richard Nixon in the midst of the Cold War.

It was 1.000 days of a government cornered by economic power, with sabotage of its economic and social plan and major truckers' strikes that paralyzed the country.

On September 11, the final assault was launched against a popular, socialist government that had become a benchmark for the popular and revolutionary movement of the time. The civic-military coup, which began the day before in Valparaíso, culminated in the bombing of the La Moneda Palace and the death of Allende, who, in his last message to his people, declared: “The seed we have sown in the dignified conscience of thousands upon thousands of Chileans cannot be definitively destroyed.”

There began the long Pinochet night that lasted until 1990, with executions of political prisoners, torture, disappearances and the implementation of an economic plan whose consequences, in the image and likeness of Washington, endure half a century later.
