46 years after the coup in Chile
“I will pay with my life for the loyalty of the people. And I tell you that I am certain that the seed we have sown in the dignified conscience of thousands and thousands of Chileans cannot be definitively extinguished.”
With these words, as the coup plotters bombed the La Moneda Palace, Salvador Allende left a statement for posterity and a “Moral punishment for those who have betrayed the oath they took.”
“Workers of my country, I want to thank you for the loyalty you always showed, the trust you placed in a man who was only the interpreter of great aspirations for justice.” He added that he came to the Presidency of Chile in 1970 through popular vote and gave his life as a final denunciation of the oligarchy and sectors of the Armed Forces that, with the direct intervention of the American CIA, swept away with weapons an unprecedented popular project in Latin America in the 70s.
46 years after Augusto Pinochet's coup, it's a good time to review the book “Salvador Allende and the social sciences"which, in 2008, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth, CLACSO published together with FLACSO as “A way of expressing our conviction that the social sciences and critical thinking can and should be a tool in the fight against oppression, injustice, and exclusion. A cry for freedom that no dictatorship will ever be able to silence.”
The anthology, compiled by Frida Modak, his former Press Secretary, gathers some of Allende's most celebrated texts and speeches, focusing on political practice and the relationship between democracy and the peaceful construction of socialism. His contributions remain highly relevant for those of us who identify as social scientists committed to the development and integration of our societies within the framework of the unwavering defense of social justice.
