Violent police intervention at the National University of San Marcos

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) strongly condemns the police repression at the National University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru, where hundreds of police officers entered accompanied by an armored vehicle to evict and arrest delegations from the interior of the country who were on the university campus. 

The police entry into the university headquarters is a flagrant violation of autonomy and a new increase in violence that has already claimed more than 50 lives. 

CLACSO rejects the government's decision to resort to violence to address the crisis in the country. The Peruvian government's actions disregard human rights. It is essential that dialogue be promoted to find a peaceful solution.

In solidarity with the Peruvian people, CLACSO demands the immediate end of the state of emergency, the cessation of violence and repression, and the holding of fair and democratic elections that reflect the will of the Peruvian people.
