In light of events that occurred in Argentina

On December 6th, the citizens of Argentina witnessed yet another judicial decision that highlighted a situation we have been observing in other Latin American countries. In recent years, leaders of governments and progressive movements have faced legal proceedings whose flaws were ultimately proven. However, these judicial decisions prevented those leaders from participating in electoral processes in their respective countries, paving the way for governments that proved detrimental to the lives of their people.

In Argentina, the court issued its ruling on Tuesday, December 7, in the case involving the country's vice president. While the ruling still has to go through various legal channels before its final decision, the sentence read by the judges already effectively bars the vice president from holding future office.

Once again, the citizens of Latin America witnessed the intrusion of the justice system into institutional life, with mechanisms that did not respect the paths of fair trial or the testimonies of witnesses that exposed the falsity of the prosecutors' accusation.

From the CLACSO Steering Committee we express our concern regarding actions by the justice system that seek to outlaw progressive leaders, placing decisions that curtail the choices of the people at a higher level.
