Inequalities and inequities in employment and labor constitute one of the most significant problems affecting the quality of life in Latin American and Caribbean societies. Rising unemployment, the spread of precarious work, the erosion of citizenship and deepening of social exclusion (Basile, 2020), the continued presence of forced labor and situations of exploitation and slavery, and other critical processes that are destructive to health and life, are interconnected and determine ways of living and working that produce patterns of illness, injury, accidents, and death among workers, their families, and their social groups. This complex situation has a particularly strong impact on the world of paid domestic workers in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This section briefly characterizes paid domestic work in Latin America and the Caribbean in general, and then addresses the most relevant aspects and particularities of the background and contexts of the Dominican Republic.

This research project arises from the recognition of the need to build descriptive and analytical processes from domestic workers' unions, academic actors and civil society organizations, in the face of the critical determinations and intersections of the domestic work process and collective health
