Latin America and the Balkans: cultural and social links

The group will have as main goal to explore the socio-cultural relationships between Latin America, the Caribbean and the Balkans.

Furthermore, its objectives will include:

• To promote the production of research that links the Latin America and Caribbean region with the Balkans;
• Encourage co-authorship among members from different continents/countries;
• To establish a new space to create and implement ideas, best practices and research related to Latin America, the Caribbean and the Balkans;
• To disseminate the activities and results of research and artistic creation in the respective academic and popular, national and international spheres, the media and social networks;
• Strengthening critical thinking among researchers in the two major regions;
• To mutually disseminate intercultural values, both Latin American/Caribbean and Balkan; 
• Establish/strengthen links with other Latin American, Caribbean, Balkan and global networks and institutions.

Furthermore, its thematic novelty stands out, focusing on the connections between two parts of the world that are both different and similar, with diverse interrelationships that have not been sufficiently addressed by academia with the depth the topic demands. Therefore, this group is called upon to strengthen a historically neglected South-South axis, namely that of Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Balkans, through international and interdisciplinary collaboration, addressing not only the Cold War and the Non-Aligned Movement, but also the issues of post-socialism. In this regard, research will be conducted that includes analyses of existing political, literary, media, and academic texts. Likewise, our plan is to investigate human migrations related to the selected temporal and geographical framework, as well as the transfer and circulation of cultural, political, educational, and other elements. 

Field research can be conducted using a variety of scientific methodologies, such as interviews, participant observation, focus groups, and analysis of literary and cinematographic materials, while also leveraging technology and new media. Given the extensive historical ties between the two regions, researchers will draw upon national archives, previous research, and new sources to deepen existing knowledge, foster novel approaches, uncover further commonalities, and draw comparisons between the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking worlds of the Americas and Southern and Eastern Europe.

Since the members of the GE belong to various associations, networks, institutes and organizations (CLACSO, CIBAM, CSIC, AIH, IDEAZ, NUCLEAS, CEISAL, Association of Serbian Hispanists, Network of Hispanists of Central Europe, CESLA, CONACYT, CONICET, AEB, ASIR, LEEM, Professor Andrzej Dembicz Foundation, etc.), the activities and results will be widely disseminated.

Within the framework of this special group, CIBAM and CLACSO jointly issued a call for a monograph entitled Cultural relations between Latin America and European socialist countries during the Cold WarThis is currently in preparation and will aim to delve deeper into the growing interest in studying the impact of the Cold War on Latin America and its links with European socialist countries, focusing especially on cultural aspects.
