Institute for Economic and Social Development – Argentina
Elizabeth Jelin, President
IDES is a non-profit, academic organization dedicated to the study of economic, social, historical, political, and cultural issues, whose primary purpose is to contribute to scientific advancement. It is an open institution that especially invites young researchers and professionals to participate in any of its many activities.
The creation of IDES dates back to the intellectual climate generated by Developmentalism in the early 1960s, and the subsequent discussion of policies for Argentine development by intellectuals, professionals, and experts in economic, social, and cultural matters. In 1958, a group of economists, sociologists, historians, and political scientists, gathered in the Economic Planning Board of the Province of Buenos Aires, inspired by the initiative of Aldo Ferrer, launched the Economic Development Journal, which would become their official publication. Their presence in academia attracted other researchers, university professors, professionals, and advanced students, and from their efforts emerged the Institute for Economic and Social Development – IDES, formally founded on November 8, 1960, in the city of Buenos Aires.
The main objectives of IDES are:
a) to promote and encourage research in social sciences.
b) to constitute a forum for the free discussion of ideas.
c) disseminate scientific production through its publications program.
d) to bring together specialists in work programs for the analysis of relevant problems.
e) develop updating, training and improvement programs through courses and seminars for graduates.
f) to promote exchange and collaboration between specialists and/or institutions in our area, as well as with their counterparts throughout the world.
The institution's programs, projects, and activities have been declared of interest by the Ministry of Education and Justice of Argentina (Resolution 972/1991) and the Honorable Chamber of Deputies of Argentina (Resolution 1/12/2010). IDES received the Konex Award in Humanities in 1996 and has received institutional funding from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation since 1999.
