CLACSO-CONACYT Agreement
The Latin American Council of Social Sciences and the National Council of Science and Technology of Mexico have signed the renewal of an agreement that aims to promote the training of postgraduate students in the areas of social sciences and humanities for the next 4 years.
The agreement will allow 400 students belonging to the CLACSO Network to access master's and doctoral scholarships at leading Mexican institutions.
In this way, the ties between CLACSO and CONACYT are strengthened within the framework of a cooperative work that has been reinforced in the last year.
The signing took place on Thursday, February 6, at the Eugenio Méndez Docurro Auditorium of CONACYT in Mexico City. Those participating included Karina Batthyány, Executive Secretary of CLACSO; María Elena Álvarez-Buylla Roces, General Director of CONACYT; Nicolás Arata, Director of Training at CLACSO; Carmen de la Peza Casares, Deputy Director of CONACYT; and Edwin Triujeque, Director of Scholarships at CONACYT.
At a press conference, Karina Batthyány highlighted the importance of the alliance between the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and CONACYT, which “internationalizes its training perspective.” She also emphasized that “CLACSO is strongly committed to training new generations, to the continuity and growth of the critical mass of social scientists and humanists, so necessary in these turbulent times our region is experiencing.” She affirmed that CLACSO’s commitments are “real and we see them in all the activities of our network. That is what we want to do with Mexico, with CONACYT, and with other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.” She concluded by announcing that “we will work over the next four years to continue and expand this network of fellows.”
In turn, María Elena Álvarez-Buylla Roces emphasized the importance of “the crystallization of agreements between countries, between sister states, where challenges are faced and common capacities are combined. And what better way to bring them to life than through this promise to the young people of the region to strengthen their education and their capacity precisely to combine these strengths and also to better face, with coherence and consistency, with socio-environmental commitment, with epistemological training and soundness, with the interculturality that is essential in our region, these great challenges facing the world in general, but our region in particular.”
Nicolás Arata expressed his pride in signing the agreement “at this time of great transformation for Mexico” and thanked in particular the team led by CONACYT's Director of Scholarships, Edwin Triujeque, for their commitment and speed, which allowed both institutions to celebrate this important agreement aimed at young students in the region. “I have had the great pleasure of seeing how many students from across Latin America and the Caribbean have come to Mexico to earn their doctorates and master's degrees here. And I have also witnessed the immense affection these young people—doctors and professors—have for Mexico,” Arata concluded.
