Is democracy collapsing?
At a time when political polarization started two current debates in Brazilian society, nearly 50 national and international guests promoted a broad debate on the origins and different historical, political and social perspectives that perpass the concept of democracy.
The SESC São Paulo and Boitempo will be held in partnership, between October 15 and 19, 2019, at the Paulo Autran Theater of SESC Pinheiros, in São Paulo, or the International Seminar “Democracy in Collapse?” The program includes a course, debates, conferences and the launch of books, along with the 33rd edition of Margem Esquerdo magazine, published semi-annually by Boitempo.

Course: Democracy can be like this – History, forms and possibilities.
Marilena Chaui, Antonio Carlos Mazzeo, Virgínia Fontes and Luis Felipe Miguel will address in a didactic way the meanings of the concept of democracy from different perspectives. In addition, in relation to historical, social quests and forms of political organization, this course aims to present an introductory arcabou that promises to highlight the reflections and discussions of the program of debates of the seminar “Democracy in Collapse” and offer tools for interpretation and social intervention.

Angela Davis: Freedom is a constant struggle. Comprehensive recording of the conference “A freedom is a constant struggle” that brought together 15 thousand people outside the Ibirapuera Auditorium, in São Paulo. The event has comments from Raquel Barreto and Bianca Santana and media from Christiane Gomes (Fundação Rosa Luxemburgo). The consecutive translation is by Raquel Luciana de Souza.
Woman, black, feminist, Marxist, intellectual, activist. Beginning in 1970, Angela Davis was everything the American establishment feared most. With firmness, she faced a harsh and insidious persecution: she must be included in the list of the people most wanted by the FBI. At the age of 28, he wrote this powerful autobiography that Boitempo publishes for the first time in Brazil, to narrate his life from his childhood until he entered a university career and against the oppression of race, gender and class. More than a story of the youth of an icon of contemporary history, this book interweaves social struggles and individual tragedies to provoke a reflection on the structurally violent character of the carceral system, of machismo and of racism, in a book directed to dignity and emancipation.
Henry Vieira: A political dispute of the evangelical movement. Excerpts from the participation of Pastor Henrique Vieira do not debate that it was widely considered or most quente and fertile of all the International Seminar “Democracy in Collapse?”. With Amanda Palha, Flávia Biroli and Henrique Vieira, the framework is the launch of the special edition of the magazine Margem Esquerda dedicated to confronting the articulations and productive tensions between Marxism and LGBT struggles, to avoid the complaint of the "smoke curtain."
