In solidarity with the trans people who have suffered violence at the hands of the Mexican Ministry of the Interior.
El CLACSO Working Group on Sexual Activisms and Citizenships: Interdisciplinary Dialogues It categorically rejects the violent actions carried out by police and National Guard members against trans people who, since June 18, had been holding a sit-in inside the offices of the Ministry of the Interior in Mexico City.
The demands of the trans community identify and denounce the structural inequalities that have historically influenced and limited their individual and social development. Therefore, the refusal to listen to them and the lack of political and institutional will to establish channels of dialogue and implement affirmative action exacerbates the particularly hostile and violent context that exists in Mexico for these individuals. This context has been systematically documented by organizations such as the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (CONAPRED), the Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination in Mexico City (COPRED), and the National Observatory of Hate Crimes against LGBT People (Arcoíris Foundation).
In critical times like the present, where there is a growth of political projects that seek to deny these and other sexual and gender dissidences, firm political positions are needed that show their willingness to contribute to social transformation and not to reproduce that institutionalized demagoguery that does not lead to substantial changes.
We urge the authorities at the Ministry of the Interior to reinstate dialogue with activists to jointly develop strategies, public policies, and institutional mechanisms to generate the much-needed progress on human rights. Only in this way will it be possible to pave the way toward societies that fully recognize sexual citizenship in Latin America and the Caribbean.
