To the international community regarding the attack on Venezuela

URGENT STATEMENT TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY REGARDING THE ATTACK ON VENEZUELA

The Steering Committee of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) expresses its strongest and most categorical condemnation of the military aggression carried out by the government of the United States of America against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the early morning of January 3, 2026.

This act of force, directed against territory and civilian population, constitutes an affront to world peace, a criminal transgression of international law and a direct threat to the foundations of sovereign coexistence among States.

We consider this armed offensive a historical step backward toward colonial practices, attempting to violently subjugate a sovereign nation and plunder its strategic resources, flagrantly violating the Charter of the United Nations and the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace. It also constitutes a direct attack on the inalienable principle of the self-determination of peoples, setting an extremely dangerous precedent for the sovereignty of all nations of the Global South.

This act also demonstrates an escalation of interventionism that ignores the inalienable right of peoples to forge their political, economic and social destiny, free from all external coercion and threats.

Given this grave situation, the CLACSO Steering Committee reaffirms Venezuela's right, under international law, to safeguard its territorial integrity and the security of its people. At the same time, it expresses its deep concern for the situation of the Venezuelan authorities and the civilian population and urgently requests that the United States government cease military actions, clarify its situation, and guarantee their well-being.

We call upon the academic community, intellectual networks, and social movements around the world to articulate a collective response of solidarity, based on critical denunciation and coordinated mobilization, in order to stop the aggression and uphold the framework of international law.

Finally, we urge states and multilateral organizations to take a firm role in defending peace and rejecting intervention, promoting in all forums the necessary actions to ensure accountability for this act of force.

The history of Our America is marked by struggles against foreign domination. Today, as yesterday, the response must be unity in diversity, steadfastness in the defense of sovereignty, and the conscious mobilization of democratic and popular forces. Peace with justice and dignity will only be possible with full respect for the will of the people.
