Since its incorporation in 1894, the history of Nicaragua's Caribbean Coast has been marked by the colonization and exploitation of Indigenous and Afro-descendant territories, favoring mestizo hegemony and dispossessing communities of their ways of life and their relationship with Mother Earth. Despite the existence of laws protecting their lands (several of them enacted after the Sandinista Revolution of 1979), neocolonialism persists through mining, logging, and fishing concessions, while the current government imposes its authorities and promotes neo-extractivism, all of which perpetuates oppression.
