The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the centrality of care in human life and in our relationship with our environment. Care work, in its various forms—both within and outside the market, at home, in the community, or in institutions—is essential for the functioning of society and the sustainability of life. The pandemic's devastation exposed the limitations of how care is organized and provided, revealing its crisis, but especially highlighting inequalities based on gender, class, race, and territory—among others—in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and UN Women developed the call for papers that gave rise to this book to expand and deepen studies on care and gender in the region, with a special focus on the inequalities that emerge in the various activities and dimensions of care. This work is also part of the strategic alliance between both organizations to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women. It is a joint commitment that trusts that the content included here will challenge in diverse and unique ways to continue investigating and working on care issues from academia, public policy and social activism with a critical and transformative vision.
