Goodbye to Carlos Walter Porto Gonçalves

The Steering Committee of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) bids farewell with sorrow to Carlos Walter Porto Gonçalves, a prominent Brazilian geographer, who passed away on Wednesday, September 06.

One of the founders of the Postgraduate Program in Geography at the Federal Fluminense University in Rio de Janeiro, where he was a professor for 24 years, Carlos Walter Porto Gonçalves deepened the theory of critical geography from the struggle of the peoples of Abya Yala, their territorialities and knowledge in the defense of territories and good living. 

Carlos Walter Porto Gonçalves leaves us an intellectual legacy to think about the territorial question, the environmental question and the emancipatory horizon in dialogue with the long journey of the movements of Our America.

The CLACSO Steering Committee extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends, with the certainty that his work will continue to live on and inspire new generations.
