CLACSO Working Group on Critical Extension: Theories and Methods in Latin America and the Caribbean
University extension has a strong tradition in Latin America and the Caribbean, expressed in numerous activities, programs, and projects, as well as in various academic events and regional networks. Unlike its origins in Europe and North America, in our region it has continued to grow and develop throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, achieving a level of integration and development unique in the world. Despite the importance of this core function of the university, it has not always been accompanied by the necessary theoretical and methodological systematization, nor has it been a focus of interest for educational research in general, resulting in a scarcity of academic production and reflection on its practice. A body of knowledge has been developed within university extension programs, but it has largely remained outside the traditional scientific publication circuits that dominate research on higher education. Promoting reflection, discussion, and subsequent systematization in formats that would allow for greater dissemination of the knowledge produced by extension practices in the region was one of the central purposes that drove the creation, within the framework of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), of the Working Group on Critical Extension: Theory and Methods in Latin America and the Caribbean, coordinated by Humberto Tommasino (Uruguay), Ivania Padilla Contreras (Honduras), Eleonora Gómez Castrilli (Argentina), and Fabio Erreguerena (Argentina). This text is intended precisely to foster the circulation and discussion of what we understand to be the various theoretical, epistemological, political, and methodological currents that converge in Latin American and Caribbean Critical Extension (LCX), considering not only regionally or globally canonized texts but also valuable recent, or less widely disseminated, contributions that illuminate current debates and issues.
