9th Latin American and Caribbean Conference of Social Sciences

From June 7 to 10, 2022, the 9th Latin American and Caribbean Conference of Social Sciences will take place at the facilities of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in the capital of the country where CLACSO has 101 member Centers and associated networks, in addition to a long history of activities and agreements with local institutions.
The event, initially planned for November 2021, had to be rescheduled because the COVID-19 pandemic continues to raise major questions about the future, with new variants of the virus and peaks in infections, awaiting the results of a vaccination that is still far from being massive and equitable, a global reality that greatly limits travel and threatens to last for a long time.
This edition will feature conferences and keynote speeches, colloquiums, panels and roundtables with international guests and prominent figures from the political, academic and social fields, as well as training workshops, an international book fair for social sciences and humanities and an international film series, among other special events.
The Latin American and Caribbean Conference on Social Sciences has been, since its first edition in 2003, the largest academic and political event in the Social Sciences and Humanities worldwide. In its eight previous editions, which coincided with the General Assemblies of the Council, diverse themes have been addressed in response to the political and social circumstances of the region. This year, the central theme of the Conference will be the complex web of inequalities.
With the organization of this initiative, CLACSO seeks to generate a space for debate and reflection within the framework of the particular historical moment we are experiencing internationally as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic that marked the year 2020, recreating a favorable environment for the evaluation and deployment of critical thinking in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The representativeness that the CLACSO network has achieved throughout its 53 years of activity, as well as its broad prestige in training, research and dissemination in Social Sciences and Humanities, promise to make the Conference a powerful space for dialogue and exchange between academia, public policies and social movements, making this event one of the most important and visible academic activities worldwide planned for 2022.

(In InfoCLACSO – November 18, 2020)
Today we're going to use this space to announce one of CLACSO's central activities for 2021: our Ninth Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities, which will take place in Mexico City, specifically at the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) campus, from November 7th to 11th, 2021. We're now almost a year away from this event, and we're beginning all the organizational and academic preparations. As always, we'll have dialogues, conferences, colloquia, panels, and training activities for master's, doctoral, and undergraduate students in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Of course, there will also be the Book Fair with all of CLACSO's collections and books available there, in addition to books from CLACSO Member Centers, the Film Festival, and artistic activities. We've been preparing and wanted to share this with all of you for what will be our central activity in 2021.
Let's not forget that this Ninth Conference, as always at CLACSO, will be presided over by the CLACSO Assembly, which in this case will consist of two sessions: the Extraordinary Assembly to consider the statutes, and then the Ordinary Assembly, held every three years, which is of great importance because it is where perspectives at the regional and global levels are discussed, and above all, where the main guidelines for the work of the following years are established. Therefore, we wanted to take this opportunity to share this news, as it is one of the most important activities that CLACSO carries out every three years.
-What is the significance of this Conference taking place in Mexico, at UNAM?
-At our last conference here in Buenos Aires, we charted the course for CLACSO 2021 in Mexico. Together with the Steering Committee and, of course, the CLACSO Centers of Mexico, which is a very important and active network of Centers, we decided to hold it at UNAM, at its headquarters in University City in Mexico City, because of its significance: first, Mexico, our network of Centers there, and second, UNAM as one of the largest public universities in Latin America and the Caribbean, which undoubtedly is and has been a benchmark in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities.
It therefore did not seem very important to be able to celebrate our Conference in this complex context for Latin America and the Caribbean, which is the space for debate, exchange and construction of ideas and alternatives for Latin America and the Caribbean in that space so full of symbolism and of course so full of strategic importance in the field of social sciences as the UNAM.
-Are there any other topics related to the thematic axes, a name that we can already anticipate or do we have to leave it for a few days from now?
Let's be a little cautious with the names, because we don't like to announce them without proper confirmation. But we can announce that we will have more than 30 thematic areas. These thematic areas represent and summarize all the areas that CLACSO works on daily in our Working Groups, in our research, training, and outreach activities. All of these areas will be represented at the Conference. And we hope that it will be, as always, the most important forum for exchange in the Social Sciences and Humanities, not only regionally, but also globally. We'll see what the health situation allows, but we can say in advance that we already have some plans in place depending on how our regional health situation evolves. We aim for a strong in-person component, but we will also guarantee virtual participation and follow-up so that no one misses out on this event, which, I reiterate, is the most important in the region and the world in the field of Social Sciences and Critical Humanities.
Save the date! The Conference is from November 7th to 11th, 2021, and the Assembly will be held a few days earlier at the UNAM headquarters in Mexico City. We will definitely meet there.
We will continue our weekly meetings. It's worth noting that the topics we've discussed so far, and those we'll continue to explore in the coming Wednesdays, will all be reflected in the more than 30 themes of our Conference. We paused our regular columns today because the announcement of this event warranted it.
