2021 marked the 500th anniversary of the fall of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, a milestone that, in historical, artistic, literary, and social discourse, signifies the conquest of central Mexico. This book engages with the debate sparked by the commemorations and critical discussions that have unfolded internationally since the mid-2000s, adopting a Latin American and situated perspective. Aimed at both specialist readers and a broader audience, this volume intertwines classic readings, innovative approaches to the conquest of Mexico, and reflections on other discourses and representations (visual, material, architectural) that have shaped the ways in which this event and its imagery have been interpreted. Thus, 500 Years of the Conquest of Mexico: Resistances and Appropriations revisits the past to engage with the present, while simultaneously establishing networks of researchers across the continent who consider the conquest of Mexico and its discourses within the broader framework of the colonial experience. The aim is to take this anniversary out of the nationalist or circumstantial sphere and expand it to the entire Latin American culture.
