500 years since the conquest of Mexico
In 2021, the 500th anniversary of the fall of Mexico-Tenochtitlan was commemorated, a milestone that marks, in the historical, artistic, literary, and social discourse, the conquest of central Mexico.
“500 Years of the Conquest of Mexico: Resistances and Appropriations”—with a prologue by Karina Batthyány and general coordination by Valeria Añónse—is situated within the debate opened by the commemorations and critical disputes that have been unfolding internationally since the mid-2000s, and it does so from a Latin American and situated perspective. Aimed at both a specialized reader and a broader audience, this volume interweaves classic readings, innovative approaches to the conquest of Mexico, and reflections on other discourses and representations (visual, material, architectural) that have shaped the ways in which this event and its images have been interpreted. This book seeks to move this anniversary beyond the nationalist or circumstantial sphere and expand its scope to encompass all of Latin American culture.
