30 Trees for Remembrance in Argentina
A 45 years since the civic-military coup of March 24, 1976
Memory, the search for Truth, and the demand for Justice in the Argentine Republic know no limits, neither geographical nor temporal. Nor are they bound by confinement or isolation. Just as in 2020, COVID-19 has forced the cancellation of the traditional March 24th march, which year after year brings together thousands who walk the streets of Buenos Aires and the country's main cities. Just as white handkerchiefs were hung from windows a year ago, in 2021 the campaign was launched to…Planting 30 trees in remembrance".
On this anniversary, CLACSO Executive Secretary Karina Batthyány stated that “the coup d'état of March 24, 1976, in Argentina brought to a close a cycle of civic-military interventions in South America that had previously overthrown constitutional governments in Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, and Uruguay, in order to impose policies of terror and advance economic projects with clear neoliberal leanings. (…) Forty-five years later, CLACSO recognizes those who, during the dictatorship and since the return of democracy on December 10, 1983, have not wavered in their struggle and their demands—I am thinking of the Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, but not only them—and who guide us in our search for more just, free, and egalitarian societies. Along this path, we cannot fail to highlight the work of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team, which earned the Juan Carlos I Latin American Prize from our Council and the National University of Quilmes. Gelman, which consisted of the making of the documentary 'The Traces of Death and Anthropology' and the book 'Science for Truth', in addition to leading the EAAF's nomination campaign for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.”
