 200 years of the University of Buenos Aires

The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) celebrates its bicentennial on August 12, five years after Argentina declared its independence in 1816. Its halls and corridors have been graced by professionals who have enriched modern Argentine life, including five Nobel Prize winners (Bernardo Houssay, Federico Leloir, César Milstein, Carlos Saavedra Lamas and Adolfo Pérez Esquivel) and eighteen presidents, in addition to hosting illustrious international figures.

According to a recent ranking by the international consulting firm QS, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) is positioned as the best Ibero-American university, reaching 69th place worldwide. Considering that there are more than 24 universities worldwide, UBA stands out as the only public, large, research-intensive, and tuition-free university to achieve such a high ranking.


To talk about the anniversary of the UBA, Julián Rebón, member of the CLACSO CD for the Argentina and Uruguay region, former student and current professor and researcher at the University of Buenos Aires, spoke to CLACSO Radio.


The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) also enriches the life of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences with the contributions of its researchers, which houses 6 Member Centers from the university in the Argentine capital:

-Center for Population, Employment and Development of the Institute of Economic Research – Faculty of Economic Sciences.

-Gino Germani Research Institute – Faculty of Social Sciences.

-Institute for Research in Economic and Social History – Faculty of Economic Sciences.

-Secretariat of Research and Postgraduate Studies – Faculty of Philosophy and Letters.

-Institute of Latin American and Caribbean Studies – Faculty of Social Sciences.

-Institute of Research in Administration, Accounting and Quantitative Methods for Management – ​​Faculty of Economic Sciences.
