101th meeting of the CLACSO Steering Committee

After the 99th meeting in El Salvador in March 2019 and the 100th in Havana, Cuba, last October, Buenos Aires was scheduled to host the 101st meeting of the CLACSO Steering Committee. The COVID-19 pandemic forced adjustments to the plans and schedule, resulting in a virtual meeting to be held on Monday, May 4, and Tuesday, May 5.

In this way, the central issues concerning the present and future of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences were addressed, with the participation of the members of the Steering Committee and the Executive Secretariat of CLACSO.

In this regard, Karina Batthyány, Executive Secretary of CLACSO, emphasized that “this meeting is of great importance because it allows us to assess the situation in the region and build alternatives from within the Latin American Council of Social Sciences. The Social Sciences and the Humanities are being strongly challenged within the framework of the current global crisis. We firmly believe that our disciplines—the Social Sciences and the Humanities—have much to contribute and to building alternatives in this current situation. This meeting of the Steering Committee addresses the pending challenges for 2020 and 2021, challenges that we had already identified but that must be updated in light of the global context. It is important to remember that the Council has established several thematic priorities that we consider to be the core issues facing the Social Sciences and the Humanities today in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Topics such as the environment, climate change, violence, the strengthening of and challenges to democracy in the current context, gender inequalities, human mobility and migration, and scientific evaluation processes are all present in this meeting.” discussion."
