International health and health sovereignty

El CLACSO Working Group on International Health and Sovereignty The health sector emerged from various academic processes and collective health policy spaces that came together in the need to create a new regional platform for training, studies, and thought.

and geopolitical action in the field of a Epistemology of Health from the South.

The goal is to produce a new plot between decolonization and health sovereignty strategy towards a new conception of Health from the South and the renewal from an ecology of knowledge of Latin American critical thought on health situated in the 21st Century.

The Working Group proposes to examine and work on International Health and Health Sovereignty from the Latin American and Caribbean region, addresses the foundations of the decolonial turn and thinking for regional health sovereignty, carries out critical analyses of the actors and global agenda of the Global North and the dependence of our theories and policies on the geopolitical gears of Pan-American health and liberal global health, proposes the Refounding of health systems, develops the contributions of decolonial feminisms in the field of health, promotes monitoring practices of critical epidemiology, the study of the international determinants of health, socio-environmental health and the epidemiology of extractivism, migrations and border health, public health emergencies, strengthens schools of governance and health management from the South, among other fields. 

Work is done from 3 levels of action in the Regional Geopolitics with regional Thematic Study Groups, at the level of work agendas with National and Institutional Centers Country and in new epistemic communities with researchers at the individual level.

The 5 areas of intervention of the GT are:

• Knowledge production and critical research
• Technical and political training in health from the CLACSO Postgraduate Network and various alliances
• Circulation and dissemination of critical thinking in health in Latin America and the Caribbean
• Open inter-institutional networks and regional cooperation from the Global South
• Technical and political support to health management and governance spaces in the Global South.

The GT is currently made up of 198 researchers and academics from 55 Research Centers, Academic Institutions and Civil Society Organizations in 23 countries of the region: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Haiti, Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, South Africa, Spain and Portugal.
