Results of the XIX International Conference on Caribbean Studies
From December 10 to 12, 2025, the University of Havana hosted the XIX International Conference on Caribbean StudiesOrganized by the Norman Girvan Chair of Caribbean Studies and co-sponsored by the CLACSO Working Group Crisis, responses and alternatives in the Greater Caribbean.
The conference took place in a particularly significant context for the Caribbean academic community, marked by the recent passing of Dr. Antonio Fidel Romero Gómez, president of the “Norman Girvan” Chair and a central figure in Caribbean studies. Within this context, the event included a heartfelt tribute to his intellectual career and institutional legacy, reaffirming the continuity of the academic project he championed for decades.

From an academic point of view, the 19th edition was notable for the high quality of the presentations and debatesarticulated around the axis The Caribbean in the face of the global geopolitical transitionThe panels addressed key issues such as US policy towards the region, the growing presence of China, debates on sovereignty and militarization, regional integration processes, as well as the energy, technological and development challenges facing the Greater Caribbean in the current scenario.

Furthermore, the conference revealed a notable presence of young researchers, whose interventions reflected theoretical rigor, empirical soundness and renewal of research agendas, reaffirming the role of this space as a key instance for the training and visibility of new generations in Caribbean studies.

As part of the event, a Working meeting with Cuban members of the CLACSO Working Group “Crisis, responses and alternatives in the Greater Caribbean”, in which the progress of the last period was evaluated and the lines of work projected for the next three years were shared, in accordance with the current call of CLACSO for the Working Groups 2026–2028.

During the closing session, the following was announced: XX International Conference on Caribbean Studies, which will take place from 9 to the 11 of December of 2026Under the central theme: “The Caribbean at a crossroads: cohesion vs. fragmentation in a challenging global and regional scenario”.
Overall, the XIX Conference reaffirmed its place as a strategic space for critical analysis, regional dialogue and academic articulation on the Caribbeaneven in a context marked by major institutional and emotional challenges.
