Intellectuals, ideas and politics

El CLACSO Working Group on Intellectuals, Ideas and Politics It seeks to study the current conditions of cultural and intellectual production in Latin America. To this end, it aims to understand what intellectual production is today, what place intellectuals occupy,
In what ways and by whom do they enable intellectual production, and what explanations do they construct of Latin American reality?
We start from the observation that the development of a Latin American thought, which articulates theory and praxis, past and present, and which is based on the affirmation of the integration of the region and is strengthened in the South-South axis constitutes today a real challenge in a context of political reconfigurations at the regional level, with significant cultural and intellectual drifts.
Today, the social sciences face a reality that poses theoretical and practical challenges, which the Working Group seeks to address. In a context of debate on cultural hegemony by left-wing and right-wing groups, novel forms are emerging in the political and cultural sphere, driven by actors who produce ideas and their mediators: think tanks, technical analysis centers, advisors, and a corporate bureaucracy, including mass media and publishing companies, academics, experts, and intellectuals.
In this sense, in this GT we propose to explain, within a larger context of transformations in the conditions of production of the social sciences in general, and in Latin America in particular, how recent changes in the social order and the political system have redesigned a research agenda for the social sciences and the link of intellectuals with the world of politics and the public sphere.
