 Communication, cultures and policies

El CLACSO Working Group Communication, cultures and politics It seeks to focus attention on the complexity of communicative phenomena in Latin America and on the need for analytical, interpretive, and imaginative frameworks that

  1. articulate the political and cultural spheres as inherent to communicative practices,
  2. explore the ways in which these areas operate and transform each other, and
  3. analyze the implications of these articulations and transformations for the social life of Latin American and Caribbean societies.

THE LOOK

In the Latin American context, one of the main concerns of this Working Group has to do with democratic crises and their correlations with growing communicative authoritarianism, the setbacks of the rule of law in some countries of the region, the emergence of ultraconservative groups and the polarizing political trends observed in recent years.

From this perspective, we understand that Latin America, the most unequal region in the world, is experiencing a wide range of social challenges that lead us to discuss right-wing ideologies more than rights, which weakens the complexity of the political landscape and fosters daily life rooted in cultures of symbolic precarity. It is in this sense that this Working Group aims to contribute to the development and strengthening of the cultural and communicational sovereignty of our peoples.

OBJECTIVE

We emphasize the multidimensional and intercultural nature of communication to contribute theoretical insights, analytical tools, empirical evidence, and creative experiences that allow us to anticipate—and/or minimize—the risks that threaten the region's democratic consolidation. But we don't want to stop there. With this diagnosis, we aim to activate and engage in digital creation to participate in the networks and arenas of debate and struggle of our time.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

One open call book per year, one international seminar per year, one face-to-face meeting per year, and all the activities proposed by the more than 70 researchers who are part of this group.
