In the Americas today, the existence of opposing trends of reaction and resistance is evident. Several reactionary trends are generating fear and anxiety: declining support for democratic values and institutions and the resurgence of authoritarianism; the rise of far-right movements and parties; and economic inequality and insecurity exacerbated by the pandemic. At the same time, local and community efforts to demand rights, call for the construction of more inclusive political and economic systems, and challenge the legacies of colonialism, coupled with the return of progressive governments in many countries of the region, are raising hopes that new futures are possible. Exploring these opposing trends will be the focus of the next International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association, to be held from June 12 to 15, 2024, in Bogotá, Colombia. Academics, professionals, and activists are invited to participate with their reflections and analyses on the reactionary forces that are generating anxiety about the future, and on the forms of collective resistance and progressive social change that allow us to dare to conceive of alternative futures based on equality, justice, and inclusion.
Film Festival LASA
The LASA Film Festival is held in conjunction with the annual LASA Congresses. Given its academic and interdisciplinary focus, it seeks to showcase audiovisual materials related to the many and diverse perspectives on Latin America: its history, its peoples, its cultures, its art, and all the themes and discourses that engage its communities. The films come from around the world, with particular attention given to the documentary genre in all its forms. In today's educational context, audiovisual productions are not only versatile and essential, but they also challenge monologic discourse by allowing the expression of multiple voices, especially those without direct access to print culture.
